Preparing for the Job Market Today: NUSS Virtual Career Fair 2021

Finding employment in this current climate is a daunting task for many job seekers. Last month, NUSS hosted the Virtual Career Fair, a members-exclusive event for members to get to know about the exciting Professional, Managerial and Executive career opportunities that await them.

Close to 50 members participated in the NUSS Virtual Career Fair 2021 hosted by the NUSS Human Capital Communities of Practice (CoP) Sub-Committee on 30 June 2021. The event featured a session on building an impactful LinkedIn profile, insightful presentations by Human Resources directors from leading brands like Carlsberg and Samsung, and a lively Q&A session.

Here are some key takeaways from the event:

LinkedIn Profile Essentials
The event kicked off with a presentation by Sean Ng from Cornerstone Global Partners, one of the largest recruitment solutions firms in Asia. Through Mr Ng’s presentation, participants stepped into his shoes and discovered how recruiters and headhunters identify potential candidates for highly sought-after job positions.
According to Mr Ng, simple steps such as using a professional headshot as your profile photo, having an eye-catching headline or customising your LinkedIn URL with your own name, can make a world of difference in amplifying the attractiveness of your LinkedIn profile.

In underscoring the importance of updating one’s work experience consistently, Mr Ng highlighted that based on LinkedIn statistics, users who ensure that their career history is up to date stand to gain as much as 12 times the number of opportunities than those who do not.

To up your LinkedIn game further, Mr Ng recommends:

Focusing on Key Achievements in Your Past Work Experience
Elaborate on the roles and responsibilities of your previous jobs and don’t be afraid to impress prospective employers by detailing your career highlights and achievements.

Getting Endorsements and Recommendations
Urge as many of your former colleagues and superiors to add endorsements and recommendations to your profile to add credibility to the skill sets you have indicated on your profile.

Growing Your Network with Industry Connections
Get your name out there quickly by joining industry-related interest groups, an excellent and quick way to touch base with hundreds of industry peers worldwide who might just very well be your future employer or colleague!

Being Active in Commenting and Sharing Relevant Posts
Don’t forget that LinkedIn works very much as a social media platform so it is always a plus to add a personal touch to your LinkedIn profile. Stay active on LinkedIn by commenting and sharing relevant posts that demonstrates that you are staying abreast with industry trends and developments.

Hearing from Industry Experts
Participants got a real treat tuning into the energetic presentations by HR directors from multibillion dollar MNCs. The line-up of speakers included:
• Mr Eric Low, Director of Human Resources, Carlsberg Singapore Pte Ltd
• Ms Alison Shee, Director of Human Resources (Asia Pacific), Harman Asia Pacific
• Ms Agnes Goh, VP Talent Acquisition SAPMENA, L’Oreal
• Mr Daniel Chia, Head of Human Resources, Samsung Electronics Singapore

The speakers were more than eager to pitch their brands and attract participants to apply to the variety of job roles available in departments such as Business Development, Marketing and Brand Intelligence. There was never any dull moment in the presentations as they were packed with many juicy nuggets of information and fun facts about the brands that the participants come across every day.

Towards the end of the evening, participants had the opportunity to clarify their questions on the job openings and consulted Mr Low with some queries on their LinkedIn profile.

All in all, participants found the event highly informative as they had a much clearer picture of the hottest job opportunities in the market now and what they can expect when working in a leading MNC.
