Since 2016, NUSS has supported NUS’ Day of Service and the call to give back did not waver despite the pandemic. This year, Community Care & Cultural Sub-Committee organised two activities in service of the Society’s two adopted charities – Dover Park Hospice and the Children’s Wishing Well.
Saturday 4 September marked a special day for about 30 NUSS members who dedicated their morning by participating in the NUS Day of Service. Here are some of the day’s highlights.
Volunteers at Mandalay Guild House:
Our volunteers gathered to assemble special care packages comprising delicious lunch bento sets and Caregiver’s Care Kit (which were packed the day before) with useful items such as hand sanitisers and herbal medicated oil.
Our volunteers set off to visit the home care patients and their caregivers under Dover Park Hospice. We hope the items came in handy for them and that our small gesture had brought joy to these families!
Volunteers at NUS’ Food Science & Technology Lab:
Another set of our volunteers chaperoned a group of kids from the Children’s Wishing Well to the National University of Singapore’s Department of Food Science & Technology for some fun learning time.
The kids visited the laboratories to learn about food manufacturing such as flavour creation, food processing, food tasting and evaluation, and food microbiology. In addition, they got to try out a body composition analyser to measure their BMI and body composition status and received a report and explanation on potential health concerns.
At the end of the tour, our volunteers distributed bento lunches to the children for them to enjoy in the comfort of their home.
Interested to do more for the community and spread some cheer? Community Care & Cultural Sub-Committee will again partner the Children’s Wishing Well on their FRESH programme on 12 November and 10 December 2021.
Intended to inculcate healthier eating habits and money management skills to the young beneficiaries, volunteers will accompany them to the supermarkets and shop for fresh groceries, household and personal care items (this programme was also featured in The Straits Times).
