NUSS Professorship Lecture with Prof Uri Gneezy: Uncovering the Power of Incentives

On 11 July 2024, about 150 NUSS members and guests explored human behaviour, decision-making, and the impact of incentives at the NUSS Professorship Lecture titled “Mixed Signals: How Incentives Really Work,” featuring Visiting Professor Uri Gneezy at Kent Ridge Guild House.

In addition to holding the Epstein/Atkinson Endowed Chair in Behavioural Economics at the Rady School of Management, University of California, and serving as a Visiting Professor at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Prof Gneezy has contributed over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, earning him the Most Highly Cited Researcher prize for the past eight years.

The session was moderated by Professor Nick Sevdalis, an accomplished researcher and fellow Visiting Professor at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, currently serving as the Academic Director for the Centre for Behavioural & Implementation Science Interventions.

Following the lecture, a robust Q&A session provided attendees with the opportunity to directly engage with Prof Gneezy on topics related to motivation and human behaviour. The event concluded with Prof Gneezy generously offering 25 copies of his book, “Mixed Signals: How Incentives Really Work,” to attendees. Proceeds from the book sales were directed to the NUSS Bursary Fund, which supports needy undergraduate students, highlighting NUSS’ ongoing commitment to its alma mater.

Established in 1996 with a $1.5 million endowment, the NUSS Professorship supports visits by distinguished local and international professors. This lecture series reflects NUSS’ commitment to fostering interactions with NUS and promoting intellectual discourse and knowledge sharing among members and the public.
