NUSS Commentary Dialogue with former President Mdm Halimah Yacob: Reflections on Leadership, Cohesion and Singapore’s Future

On 7 November 2024, NUSS had the privilege of hosting Mdm Halimah Yacob, former President of the Republic of Singapore, for the NUSS Commentary Dialogue. Mdm Halimah spoke on the issue of social progress and cohesion in light of Singapore’s upcoming 60th birthday.

The session began with an address by NUSS President Mr Tong Hsien-Hui, who highlighted Mdm Halimah’s distinguished career in public service, union leadership and community engagement. He spotlighted her incredible contributions to Singapore in her role as Singapore’s first female President and her longstanding association with NUSS, having served as Patron and a former Guest-of-Honour at the opening of the Mandalay Guild House.

Mdm Halimah, who is currently Chancellor at the Singapore University of Social Sciences, opened her remarks by reflecting on key ideas on leadership and governance explored in Commentary on Singapore, a recently launched compilation of essays by Singaporean thought leaders previously published in NUSS’ journal Commentary. In particular, she offered her insights into three key areas: upholding international law and a rules-based global order amidst rising nationalism, protectionism and insularity; building a cohesive, multi-racial society to counter the rising tide of polarisation and identity politics; and strengthening the labour movement as a democratic institution in the face of workplace deregulation and growing corporate power.

In her remarks, she alluded to the uncertainty many are feeling due to the volatility caused by military and humanitarian conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East and the Presidential elections in the United States. She also pointed to other disruptors such as the rising tide of nationalism, the growing influence of global corporations and the looming spectre of climate change. As Singapore approaches its 60th year, Mdm Halimah called for robust and courageous leadership to navigate uncertainties and emphasised the importance of compassion in empowering marginalised communities, particularly women and minorities.

Mdm Halimah encouraged NUSS members to champion such forms of leadership, noting that “This is how we can be sure that Singapore is sustainable, inclusive and promises a good future for the people who are at the heart of it.”

The session concluded with a lively dialogue moderated by Dr Gillian Koh, editor of Commentary on Singapore. Mdm Halimah candidly addressed various topics and issues, including her experience as Singapore’s first and only female President.

As NUSS President Mr Tong noted, the NUSS Commentary Dialogue truly embodied the theme of the 70th Anniversary celebrations, ‘Enduring Ties & Building Legacies’. NUSS remains committed to fostering thought leadership through its forums and lectures, featuring influential global speakers. By creating national and international discourse platforms, promoting lifelong learning, and offering enriching activities, NUSS continues to inspire its community to engage meaningfully and leave lasting legacies.
