Unveiling Hidden Gems: Discovering Armenia, Georgia, and Uzbekistan

Armenia, Georgia, and Uzbekistan are three countries known for their rich history, vibrant cultures, and breathtaking landscapes. NUSS offered members the opportunity to explore these remarkable destinations on a 15-day curated tour. The journey took them through ancient cities, scenic mountains, and historical landmarks, providing a deeply immersive experience.

The journey began in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital and the heart of the world’s first Christian nation. Accommodations near Republic Square offered easy access to historic landmarks and vibrant nightlife. The Cascade Complex impressed with its panoramic views and art galleries, while the Armenian Genocide Museum provided a poignant insight into the country’s history. A visit to the Khor Virap Monastery, framed by the majestic Mount Ararat, was a spiritual highlight. En route to Georgia, the group passed Azerbaijan’s border, underscoring Armenia’s complex geopolitical history.

In Georgia, members discovered Tbilisi’s rich cultural tapestry, including a cable car ride to Narikala Fortress and wine tastings at Khareba Winery’s iconic “Wine Tunnel” in the Kakheti region. Culinary experiences included sampling khinkali, Georgia’s renowned soup dumplings, and enjoying a home-cooked meal with a local family. The Greater Caucasus in Kazbegi offered stunning views of Mount Kazbeg and a visit to the hilltop Gergeti Trinity Church. Every destination showcased Georgia’s unique blend of Asian and European influences.

The trip’s final leg brought the group to Uzbekistan, celebrated for its Islamic heritage and Silk Road history. In Tashkent, they explored Amir Temur Square and the bustling Chorsu Bazaar. High-speed trains transported them to Bukhara and Samarkand, where they marvelled at architectural wonders like the Samanid Mausoleum, Registan Square, and Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis. A dinner of traditional plov with a local family in Samarkand was a culinary highlight.

As the trip concluded, the group reflected on the local people’s warmth and resilience, the guides’ expertise, and the camaraderie among the group. These lesser-travelled destinations left an indelible impression, making the journey truly special.
