“If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” – Chinese proverb
Children and teens need healthy and nutritious food to provide a strong foundation for growth, learning and development. To spread this message on the importance of making the right food choices, a group of NUSS members volunteered at the Children’s Wishing Well FRESH event on 26 November 2021, where volunteers would accompany their young beneficiaries on a grocery shopping trip to shop for fresh groceries, household and personal care items.
Each being allocated a $30 budget, the volunteers guided the children around the supermarket to seek out fresh fruits, vegetables and protein. While it was important to purchase nutritious food, the kids were also able to spend a small fraction of the budget on their favourite treat of choice such as ice cream, chocolates or biscuits.
Through this meaningful exercise, the young beneficiaries learnt tips on healthier eating habits and better money management. The children also enjoyed this trip immensely as it gave them a greater sense of responsibility and independence in decision making! The low volunteer to child ratio also allowed our volunteers to spend one-on-one time with the beneficiary.
Huge thanks to all our volunteers who attended this FRESH event! If you would like to attend our next event this Friday (10 December), click here for more information.
