The NUSS-NUS Mentorship Programme held its mid-year gathering on 14 May 2024 at Kent Ridge Guild House, with 42 mentors and 40 mentees attending. Alumni Development Sub-Committee Chairperson 2023/2024, Mr Sonny Yuen, emphasised celebrating the mentoring journey and supporting mentees.
The evening featured a wine appreciation segment by Mr Malcolm Tham and an appreciation card exchange.
In its 12th cycle, the NUSS-NUS Mentorship Programme, in collaboration with the NUS Office of Student Affairs, fosters mentoring relationships and connections. Mr Yuen noted, “Marking NUSS’ 70th Anniversary, giving back to our alma mater is a priority, and we aim to forge enduring ties through this programme.”
Let’s hear from some of our long-standing mentors about their mentorship journey:
Mr Tan Chen Yit, a mentor who has been part of the programme for seven years, volunteering is a way to offer the career guidance he wished he had in his younger days. “It took me 20 years before I appreciated the power of mentorship, both in the workplace and outside. If I had mentors earlier in life, I would have avoided many mistakes and missteps in my career and journey. Mentoring eager mentees to shorten their learning curve, make better decisions, and stay focused through goal setting makes up for what I missed,” he shared.
Mr Paul Chee, a mentor since 2015/2016, finds the mentorship journey deeply fulfilling. “Mentorship gives me insights into the world of young adults. It provides me with new perspectives and ideas. This mentoring journey has enriched me as much as I have inspired my mentees,” he elaborated.
Mentorship is especially rewarding when a mentee goes on to flourish in his/her field. Eight-time mentor Mr Bhaskar Perumal aims to give back to the NUS community by sharing his experiences with the next generation. He fondly recounted: “Upon graduating with his master’s degree, one of my mentees continued his internship at a locally-based start-up company, contributing to their supply chain activities. He subsequently moved to Taiwan and was later posted to a multi-national company in China.”
